ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro is a close call at the same price of $20 a month, and Google AI Pro at $19.99 belongs in the same comparison. Choose ChatGPT Plus for the widest range of features and OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, Claude Pro for writing, long documents and careful analysis, and Google AI Pro if you want Gemini inside Gmail and Docs plus 5 TB of storage. If you only need one, the decision is about which ecosystem you work in, not price.

All prices below are US list prices from each company's own pricing pages, checked on October 5, 2026. Taxes and regional prices vary.

Spoken plainly: all three cost about twenty dollars a month. Claude is the only one with a built-in annual discount, which brings it to seventeen dollars a month. ChatGPT Plus includes OpenAI's top model, Astra. Claude Pro includes Opus 5.5 and lets you dip into the more powerful Fable 5.1 using credits. Google AI Pro gives you Gemini 3.1 Pro, Google's best model available to subscribers today, plus a large storage bundle.

ChatGPT Plus: the most features for $20

ChatGPT Plus gets OpenAI's newest models: GPT-6 Astra is rolling out to Plus users, and GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Work is OpenAI's agent mode, which can take on multi-step projects using your connected apps and produce documents, slides and spreadsheets. Its usage draws on your plan allowance and varies with the size of the task, according to OpenAI's ChatGPT Work announcement.

Below Plus sits Go at $8 a month, which shows ads in the US. Above it are three Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month. The $500 tier, added on September 29, is the only one with Astra Ultrafast, per OpenAI's release notes. Pro plans also add Astra Pro, a higher-effort version of the model.

Best for: people who want one assistant for writing, images, voice, research and agents. Watch out for: newer models often reach Work and Codex before the regular Chat mode, and heavy Work use can exhaust the allowance.

Claude Pro: best for writing and deep work

Claude Pro adds Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic's recommended default model, to everything in the free plan. It also includes Claude Code, Research, Projects, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, and Anthropic's newer Design, Slides and Docs tools, according to Claude's pricing page. Claude Fable 5.1, Anthropic's most capable public model, is available on Pro through usage credits rather than included outright.

Above Pro, Max starts at $100 a month and comes in two sizes with five or twenty times Pro's usage, priority access at busy times and early features. On Max, Fable can use up to half of your weekly limits.

Best for: writers, analysts, researchers, lawyers and developers who work with long documents or codebases. Our Claude Fable vs Opus vs Mythos guide explains the models. Watch out for: there is no cheaper paid tier between Free and Pro, and Fable access is metered.

Google AI Pro: best value if you use Google

Gemini through Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and bundles 5 TB of Google One storage, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, Deep Research, and image, video and music generation, per Google's AI plans page. Google also lists $10 a month in Google Cloud credits for developers. Eligible students can get AI Pro free for a year.

The catch is the model. Gemini 3.1 Pro is Google's best model available to subscribers, but it trails the newest OpenAI and Anthropic models. Google's next flagship, Gemini 4 Argon, is announced but restricted, and Google says it will reach AI Ultra subscribers first. Ultra costs $99.99 a month for five times AI Pro's usage or $199.99 for twenty times, according to Google's subscriptions page. Track the rollout in our Gemini 4 Argon release date guide.

Below Pro, AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage. From October 9, AI Plus users can use the Flash-Lite and Flash models but not Pro, and free users are limited to Flash-Lite, 9to5Google reports. AI Pro is gaining Deep Think, which was previously reserved for Ultra.

Best for: Gmail and Google Drive users, families who want storage and AI on one bill, and students. Watch out for: today's top Gemini model is a generation behind its rivals until Argon arrives.

What about SuperGrok?

Grok is free to try, and SuperGrok adds higher limits, priority access and multi-agent reasoning. Grok's strength is live search across the web and X. xAI's plan page loads prices dynamically, so check grok.com/plans for current SuperGrok pricing where you live rather than relying on third-party price lists.

Power-user tiers compared

PlanPrice per month (US)Main reason to pay
ChatGPT Pro 100 / 200 / 500$100 / $200 / $500More usage, Astra Pro; Ultrafast on 500 only
Claude Max 5x / 20xFrom $100Five or twenty times Pro usage, more Fable
Google AI Ultra$99.99 or $199.99Deep Think, Gemini Agent, 20 TB storage, Argon first

In words: all three companies now sell plans starting around one hundred dollars a month. These only make sense if you regularly hit the limits of the twenty-dollar tier, or you need a specific feature such as Astra Ultrafast, extra Fable usage or early Argon access.
