Spoken plainly: Perplexity is built as an answer engine that shows its sources. ChatGPT is built as a general assistant that can search when needed, then keep working on the same thread with files, projects and Interactive UI.

What ChatGPT is

ChatGPT is OpenAI's flagship assistant. As of October 7, 2026, the Chat experience runs GPT-6: GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go, with Intelligent UI rolling out in the Chat tab, according to OpenAI's GPT-6 announcement. Work and Codex keep their own model lineup in that release.

Consumer plans on OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page include:

PlanUS monthly priceRole
Free$0Everyday Chat with GPT-6 Luna; limited uploads, images, voice, Deep Research and Codex
Go$8More messages, uploads, images and voice than Free
Plus$20Advanced reasoning, higher limits, Deep Research, custom GPTs, Codex access, Intelligent UI
ProFrom $100Highest included usage; Pro reasoning with GPT-6 Astra; Ultrafast on top tiers

Best for: drafting and editing, multi-step chats, file analysis, Interactive UI tools built in the conversation, custom GPTs, and coding with Codex on paid plans.

Watch out for: Free and Go cap tool-heavy use; web answers are not always presented as citation-first the way Perplexity is.

What Perplexity is

Perplexity is an answer engine: it searches the web and replies with inline citations that show where each claim came from. Perplexity's pricing FAQ states that every answer includes inline citations, and that Pro and Max add premium data sources such as PitchBook and Statista for finance and market work (Perplexity pricing).

On models, the same pricing FAQ says Perplexity orchestrates multiple top models and selects the best one per query, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and NVIDIA Nemotron. Pro and Max let you select a preferred model; Max adds advanced reasoning models for deep investigations and large datasets.

Consumer plans on Perplexity's pricing page:

PlanUS list priceRole
Free$0Cited search with limited Pro Searches and Research; basic uploads
Pro$20/monthHigher limits, Deep Research, Perplexity Computer, preferred model, create documents and apps, premium sources
Max$200/month or $2,000/yearHighest limits and frontier-model access; priority support; early features

Perplexity documents Max pricing in its Max help article ($200 monthly or $2,000 annually; annual billing on the web app). Education Pro is a discounted student/educator tier with SheerID verification; see Perplexity's plan guide for eligibility.

Best for: current-events questions, research that needs visible sources, comparing claims across the web, and people who want a citation trail without leaving the answer.

Watch out for: Free Pro Search and Research quotas are tight; heavy Computer, Research or file work usually means Pro or Max. ChatGPT still leads for long creative drafting and OpenAI-native agent surfaces.

Where they shine (and where they don't)

Research and current information

Perplexity wins the default research layout. Answers arrive with citations you can open. Pro and Max raise Research and file limits and unlock premium sources, per Perplexity's plan comparison and pricing FAQ.

ChatGPT can search the web and, on paid plans, run Deep Research reports. GPT-6 also improved when it decides to look things up, per OpenAI's October 7 post. The difference is product shape: ChatGPT treats search as a tool inside a chat; Perplexity treats cited search as the product.

For a broader chatbot lineup that includes Claude and Grok, see ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok. For paid seat pricing that includes Claude and Google, see ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro.

Writing, coding and Interactive UI

ChatGPT is the stronger general workspace. Intelligent UI can add charts, buttons and small tools inside the reply. Plus and Pro unlock higher reasoning limits, Projects, custom GPTs and Codex. Perplexity Pro and Max can create documents and apps and run Computer workflows, but the everyday product still centers on search-and-cite.

If your main job is long-form writing or careful document work, also try Claude. If your work already lives in Google apps, compare Gemini in the four-way guide above.

Pricing: Plus vs Pro at twenty dollars

Both ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro list at $20 per month. That makes the twenty-dollar decision a use-case call:

If you mostly…Prefer
Want cited answers and live web researchPerplexity Pro
Want GPT-6 chat, Interactive UI, custom GPTs, CodexChatGPT Plus
Hit Free limits on bothStart with the product that matches the job, not both at once
Need maximum usageChatGPT Pro (from $100) or Perplexity Max ($200)

ChatGPT Go at $8 sits below Plus for more messages without the full Plus toolkit. Perplexity has no Go-style mid tier between Free and Pro on the consumer pricing page.

Privacy and training

OpenAI lets ChatGPT users turn off "Improve the model for everyone" under Data Controls, and offers Temporary Chat that is not used to improve models while the chat stays temporary (OpenAI Data Controls).

Perplexity says Free, Pro and Max users have AI Data Retention enabled by default, and can opt out in Account Settings so future data is not used to train models. Opt-outs do not erase data collected before the change. Enterprise data is never used for AI training, per Perplexity's data collection help article.

Both products still process data to run the service. If you need zero-training enterprise contracts, look at ChatGPT Business/Enterprise or Perplexity Enterprise rather than consumer Free/Pro/Max alone.

ChatGPT vs Perplexity for research

For chatgpt vs perplexity for research, Perplexity is usually the faster path to a sourced brief. Start there when the question is "what do current sources say?" Move the draft into ChatGPT when you need to rewrite, expand, critique or turn the brief into a longer document with Interactive UI or custom GPTs.

ChatGPT Deep Research on Plus and above is competitive for long, multi-step reports. It is not a substitute for reading the underlying sources yourself on either product.

Who should pick which

  • You want citations on every answer: Perplexity Free, then Pro if you hit limits.
  • You want a GPT-6 daily driver for writing and tools: ChatGPT Free or Go, then Plus.
  • You are choosing one $20 seat: Perplexity Pro for research; ChatGPT Plus for chat workspace and coding.
  • You need maximum personal usage: ChatGPT Pro or Perplexity Max — pick by whether search-and-cite or GPT-6 agents matter more.
  • You care about turning off training on consumer chats: both offer toggles; ChatGPT's Data Controls and Temporary Chat are the clearer OpenAI path; Perplexity's AI Data Retention opt-out is the Perplexity path.
  • You need workplace admin controls: ChatGPT Business/Enterprise or Perplexity Enterprise, not Free alone.

FAQ

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT?

Not overall. Perplexity is better when you need cited, web-grounded answers. ChatGPT is better for general chat, Interactive UI, custom GPTs, deep file work and OpenAI coding tools. Pick by the job.

Is Perplexity free?

Yes. The Free plan includes cited search with limited Pro Searches and Research. Heavier research, Computer and create-files usage usually needs Pro or Max.

Is ChatGPT Free enough in 2026?

For everyday text chat, often yes: Free includes GPT-6 Luna in Chat as the October 2026 rollout continues. Tool-heavy work (uploads, images, Deep Research, Codex) hits limits faster, which is when Go or Plus matters.

Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus: which $20 plan?

Choose Perplexity Pro if your bottleneck is research with citations and premium sources. Choose ChatGPT Plus if your bottleneck is GPT-6 conversation, Interactive UI, Projects, custom GPTs or Codex.

Does Perplexity use ChatGPT models?

Perplexity's pricing FAQ says it orchestrates multiple top models, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Nemotron, and can pick a preferred model on Pro and Max. That is Perplexity's product routing, not the same as using ChatGPT.com.

Can I use both?

Yes. A common pattern is Perplexity for sourced research, then ChatGPT for drafting and editing. Just do not paste confidential material into either product without checking your plan's privacy settings and workplace rules.
