In an LLM subscription vs API cost comparison, the subscription wins for most people who chat every day, and the API wins for light use, automation and anything you build into your own app. A typical daily chat habit costs about $11 a month in API tokens on a midrange model like GPT-6.1 Sol or Claude Sonnet 5.5, but the same habit on a top model like GPT-6 Astra or Claude Fable 5.1 runs about $54, far more than a $20 plan. The bigger news is that the line is blurring: since October 2026, ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max include monthly API credits worth up to the plan's price.

All prices below are US list prices from each company's own pricing pages and help centers, checked on October 29, 2026. The cost examples are our own arithmetic on those list prices, not figures the companies publish.

Subscription vs API: how the two pricing models differ

A subscription is a flat monthly fee for an app: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok. You get a usage allowance, not a token count. Anthropic says plan limits reset on a rolling five hour window with weekly caps on top, and that "there's no fixed message count," per the Claude pricing page. OpenAI says the same in its own words: its pricing docs warn that "API token prices are separate from subscription usage; don't use them to estimate included tasks."

An API is pay per token. You create a key on a developer platform, prepay or attach a card, and every request is billed by the tokens going in and out. There is no app, no memory and no built in search unless you build or pay for them. If keys are new to you, start with what an LLM API key is.

Google's credits come from its Google Developer Program, and the plan page does not say they cover Gemini API bills, so check your Cloud billing before counting on them.

What the APIs cost per million tokens

These are standard list prices for the current flagship and budget models. Input is what you send (including chat history); output is what the model writes, and reasoning or "thinking" tokens are billed as output.

ModelInputOutputNotes
GPT-6 Luna$0.10$0.50Up to 272K input tokens
GPT-6.1 Sol$2$10Up to 272K input tokens
GPT-6 Astra$10$50Up to 272K input tokens
Claude Haiku 5.5$0.10$0.50Prompts up to 100K tokens

Claude Fable 5.1$10$50
Gemini 4 Argon$2$10Rises to $4 and $20 on December 1, 2026
Grok 4.7$2$6Under 200K prompt tokens

Sources: OpenAI API pricing, Claude pricing, Gemini Developer API pricing and xAI models and pricing. Longer prompts cost more on every one of these: OpenAI doubles input above 272K tokens, Haiku 5.5 jumps to $0.50 and $2.50 above 100K, and Grok 4.7 doubles at 200K. LLM subscription vs API cost comparison: three usage profiles

To compare like for like, we priced three monthly habits at the list rates above. Each message assumes 3,000 input tokens (your prompt plus the conversation the model rereads) and 600 output tokens, with no caching or batch discounts.

  • Light: 5 messages a day, 150 a month (450K input, 90K output)
  • Daily: 30 messages a day, 900 a month (2.7M input, 540K output)
  • Heavy: 150 messages a day, 4,500 a month (13.5M input, 2.7M output)
ModelLightDailyHeavy
GPT-6 Luna or Claude Haiku 5.5$0.09$0.54$2.70
Grok 4.7$1.44$8.64$43.20
GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5 or Gemini 4 Argon (to Nov 30)$1.80$10.80$54
Claude Opus 5.5 or Gemini 4 Argon (from Dec 1)$3.60$21.60$108
GPT-6 Astra or Claude Fable 5.1$9$54$270

What the table says:

  1. Light users overpay for a subscription. Five questions a day costs under $2 a month on a midrange model, a tenth of a $20 plan.
  2. Daily users sit near the break even point on midrange models. About $11 in tokens is less than $20, but the plan adds search, file uploads, image generation, voice and memory that the API either lacks or bills separately. OpenAI, for example, charges $10 per 1,000 web search calls on top of tokens.
  3. Heavy users and top models favor the subscription. A heavy month on Astra or Fable passes $250 in tokens, while the subscription caps your bill at the plan price until you hit a usage limit.

Two things push real API bills up from these estimates: long conversations (every message resends the history) and reasoning models that write many hidden thinking tokens. Two things push them down: prompt caching (cached input on GPT-6.1 Sol is $0.10 per million, a twentieth of the normal rate) and batch processing, which OpenAI and Google both list at half the standard price.

The new hybrid: subscriptions that include API credits

The cleanest change this month is that the top consumer plans now bundle API money.

ChatGPT Pro and Business. Since October 28, 2026, eligible Pro subscribers can claim monthly API credits equal to their tier: $100, $200 or $500. Business workspaces get $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 a month, per OpenAI's API credits guide and Help Center article. Plus, Enterprise, Edu and free trials are not eligible.

Claude Max and Team. Anthropic's version, announced earlier in October, gives Max 5x $100 a month and Max 20x $200, with the same $20 and $100 per seat Team pool capped at $500, per its Help Center and platform docs. Free, Pro and Enterprise are not eligible.

The fine print is similar on both sides:

  • You link a developer organization you own, and the subscription must be at least seven days old.
  • Credits expire at the end of each billing cycle and never roll over.
  • They do not raise your app limits, and they do not pay for interactive coding tools (Codex through API keys on OpenAI's side, Claude Code on Anthropic's).
  • No card is needed on the developer platform while credits last.

So for a developer who already pays $100 or more for ChatGPT Pro or Claude Max, the API is effectively free up to that amount each month. At the GPT-6.1 Sol or Sonnet 5.5 rates above, $100 covers roughly 8,300 of our sample messages.

The other hybrid: subscriptions that bill at API rates

The line blurs from the other direction too. On Claude's paid plans, when you reach a limit you can turn on usage credits "to keep working at standard API rates," per the Claude pricing FAQ. Claude Enterprise works the same way by design: $20 per seat a month plus usage billed at API rates. OpenAI lets Plus and Pro users buy additional credits when they run out, and publishes a credit rate card per million tokens in its pricing docs. In practice, a power user on either plan may end up paying a mix of flat fee and token pricing.

Pros and cons

Subscription pros:

  • Predictable bill, capped at the plan price until limits hit
  • Search, files, memory, voice, image generation and agents included
  • No code or key management

Subscription cons:

  • You pay the full fee in months you barely use it
  • Limits are not published as message counts, so heavy weeks can stall
  • ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro include no API credits for your own apps

API pros:

  • Pay only for what you use, often a few dollars a month for light use
  • Pick any model, including cheap ones like GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 per million input tokens
  • Batch and caching discounts for automated work

API cons:

  • Costs grow without a ceiling unless you set spend limits
  • Top models get expensive fast
  • Tools like web search are billed extra, and you build the interface yourself

Which should you choose?

  • You chat a few times a week: use a free app tier or a pay per token API with a cheap model. Our free OpenAI API alternatives list shows where to start.
  • You use one assistant every day for work: a $20 plan is the simpler, safer buy.
  • You build apps or automations: use the API, and set a monthly spend limit on day one.
  • You do both, heavily: ChatGPT Pro or Claude Max now covers the API side too, up to the plan price each month.
  • You want Grok in your own code: the xAI API guide explains how its prepaid credits work, since The X Subscription lists no API credit.

FAQ

Is the API cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?

For light and moderate use, usually yes. At our daily habit of 30 messages, GPT-6.1 Sol costs about $10.80 a month in tokens versus $20 for Plus, though you lose the app's search, memory and image features. At heavy use, or on GPT-6 Astra, the API costs more.

Does ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro include API credits?

No. OpenAI's monthly API credits start at the Pro tiers and Business, and Anthropic's start at Max and Team. Both companies bill the API separately from those $20 plans.

How many API tokens does $20 buy?

On GPT-6.1 Sol or Claude Sonnet 5.5 at $2 input and $10 output per million, $20 buys about 1,670 messages of 3,000 tokens in and 600 out. On GPT-6 Luna or Claude Haiku 5.5 it buys about 33,000. On GPT-6 Astra or Claude Fable 5.1, about 330.

Do subscription API credits roll over?

No. Both OpenAI and Anthropic say unused monthly credits expire at the end of the billing cycle. Business workspaces on OpenAI that pay annually get the full year's grant at once, capped at $6,000.

Will the Gemini API get more expensive?

Gemini 4 Argon's introductory price of $2 input and $10 output per million tokens runs through November 30, 2026, and doubles to $4 and $20 from December 1, per Google's pricing page and our Gemini 4 Argon release date guide.

Is an LLM the same as ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT is an app that runs several OpenAI models; the API gives you those models without the app. Our ChatGPT vs LLM guide explains the difference.
