Spoken plainly: Meta AI is free and already inside the social apps billions of people open every day. Gemini is Google's destination assistant that plugs into the Google account you may already use for mail, files and search.

What Meta AI is

Meta AI is Meta's consumer assistant. Meta says the core experience across its apps and Meta AI stays free, and that Meta One subscriptions unlock higher AI usage and expression features on top of that free base, per Meta's Meta One announcement.

You can use it in WhatsApp (including @Meta AI in chats), Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, on meta.ai, in the Meta AI app, and on Meta AI glasses where those products are available. Meta's privacy post states that Meta AI does not join a chat on its own, and in group chats it only reads messages that invoke Meta AI, not the rest of the thread.

Under the hood, Meta's Muse Spark line is the company's multimodal model family for agentic and coding work. Muse Spark 1.3 is listed with a one-million-token context window on Meta's developer pages at developer.meta.com/ai/models/muse-spark. Consumer Meta AI features and the developer Muse Spark API are related but not identical products: the chatbots in apps are free to try; the API is billed separately.

Best for: quick answers, image and video creation inside Meta apps, help while you are already messaging someone, and people who refuse to open another app.

Watch out for: weaker Google Workspace-style productivity than Gemini, and privacy defaults that are harder to opt out of in the United States.

What Gemini is

Gemini is Google's consumer AI assistant on gemini.google.com and in Gemini mobile apps. Google's subscriptions page lists a Free plan with Gemini app features such as Flash-Lite access, image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems, plus 15 GB of shared Google storage, per gemini.google/subscriptions.

Paid Google AI plans raise limits and unlock more models and Google product extras. US list prices shown on Google's AI plans page and the Gemini subscriptions page as of this writing:

PlanUS monthly priceRole
Free$0Everyday Gemini with Flash-Lite and standard limits
Google AI Plus$4.992× Free usage; Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro access; 400 GB storage; Gemini in more Google apps
Google AI Pro$19.994× Free usage; higher Pro-model access; 5 TB storage; Gemini in Gmail/Docs; Flow credits; YouTube Premium Lite
Google AI Ultra$99.99 or $199.995× or 20× Pro usage; Deep Think and Gemini Spark in select countries; from 20 TB storage; YouTube Premium

Always re-check gemini.google/subscriptions before you buy, because included models and limits change. For how Gemini's next flagship may arrive first on Ultra, see Gemini 4 Argon release date. For paid-plan comparisons that include ChatGPT and Claude, see ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro.

Best for: people whose work already lives in Gmail, Docs and Drive; students and families who want storage plus AI on one bill; Deep Research reports and Notebook workflows.

Watch out for: Free Gemini is more limited than free Meta AI inside social apps; serious Pro-model headroom usually means paying for AI Plus or Pro.

Where they shine (and where they don't)

Everyday chat and messaging

Meta AI wins on friction inside Meta's apps. If the question lands in WhatsApp or Instagram, you never leave the thread. Meta also says private messages with friends and family are not used to train its generative AI models unless someone shares those messages with Meta AI features, per Meta's generative AI privacy post. Interactions with Meta AI itself may still be used to improve products.

Gemini wins when the chat is tied to your Google life: drafts in Gmail, notes in Docs, files in Drive, and a Gemini history you opened on purpose.

Work in email, docs and research

Gemini is the stronger productivity seat. Google AI Pro and Ultra document Gemini in Gmail, Docs and related apps, Deep Research, Gemini Notebook, and (on higher plans) Chrome auto browse. Meta AI is improving agent-style actions and Meta Business Agent on Meta One creator and business plans, but everyday free Meta AI is still optimized for messaging and media, not a full Google Workspace companion.

Images and video

Both products emphasize generative media. Meta AI leans into free everyday image creation and video powered by Muse models, with higher media allowances on Meta One Core and Premium. Gemini and Google Flow cover image, music and video generation, with usage and Flow credits that rise from AI Plus through Ultra, per Google's AI plans page. If you already create content inside Instagram or WhatsApp, Meta AI is closer to the publish button. If you want creative tools next to Drive storage and Search, Gemini's paid ladder fits better.

Privacy and data controls

Google documents Gemini Apps Activity controls: you can review and delete activity, change auto-delete windows, and turn off Keep Activity so future chats are not kept in Activity or used to improve Google AI models in the way that setting describes, per the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and activity help article. Even with Keep Activity off, Google still processes chats to respond and for safety, including limited retention.

Meta documents that it trains generative AI on public Facebook and Instagram posts and on interactions with AI features, and that private friend/family messages are excluded unless shared with AI. EU and UK users can object to some training uses through Meta's Privacy Center forms. There is no equivalent simple US toggle that matches Gemini's Keep Activity switch for everyday Meta AI chats. If privacy control is the deciding factor, Gemini's documented activity settings are the clearer consumer path.

Meta AI vs Gemini vs ChatGPT vs Grok

If you are comparing more than two assistants:

Who should pick which

  • You live in WhatsApp or Instagram and want free help now: Meta AI.
  • Your day runs on Gmail, Docs and Drive: Gemini Free, then Google AI Plus or Pro if you hit limits.
  • You want free video and image creation in social apps: Meta AI, then Meta One if you hit free media limits.
  • You want Deep Research, Notebook and storage on one Google bill: Google AI Pro.
  • You care about US activity / training controls: prefer Gemini's Keep Activity settings over Meta AI alone; verify each product's current toggles.
  • You need workplace admin controls: Gemini for Workspace / enterprise editions, or ChatGPT / Claude / Microsoft 365 Copilot for work — not free Meta AI alone.

FAQ

Is Meta AI better than Gemini?

Not overall. Meta AI is better when convenience inside Meta apps matters most. Gemini is better for Google Workspace work, Deep Research and a paid Google AI ladder with storage. Pick the product that matches the job.

Is Meta AI free?

Yes for everyday use. Meta says the core Meta AI experience stays free. Meta One Core and Premium add higher AI media usage and app expression features on top.

Is Gemini free?

Yes to start. Google documents a Free Gemini plan with Flash-Lite access and standard limits. Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra raise limits and unlock more models and Google product extras.

Meta AI vs Gemini for students?

If schoolwork already lives in Google Docs, Drive and Gemini Notebook, Gemini (especially AI Plus or student AI Pro offers where available) is usually the better fit. If you mainly need quick help inside WhatsApp or Instagram between classes, free Meta AI is enough for many people.

Meta AI vs Google Gemini for coding?

Neither is primarily a coding IDE. Gemini's paid plans document higher limits in AI Studio, Jules and Antigravity for developers. Meta's Muse Spark API is a separate developer product from chatting with Meta AI in WhatsApp. For deep coding seats, many people still prefer ChatGPT Codex or Claude Code rather than Meta AI or Gemini alone.

Should I pay for Meta One or Google AI Pro?

Pay for Meta One if you want more Meta AI image and video generation and Instagram/Facebook/WhatsApp expression features. Pay for Google AI Pro if you want higher Gemini limits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage and Flow credits. Many people keep free Meta AI for messaging and add Google AI Plus or Pro only if Gemini becomes a daily work habit.
