Spoken plainly: Perplexity is built as an answer engine that shows its sources. Claude is built as a general frontier assistant you open for long threads, careful prose and paid coding tools.
What Perplexity is
Perplexity is an answer engine: it searches the web and replies with inline citations that show where each claim came from. Perplexity's pricing FAQ states that every answer includes inline citations, and that Pro and Max add premium data sources such as PitchBook and Statista for finance and market work (Perplexity pricing).
On models, the same pricing FAQ says Perplexity orchestrates multiple top models and selects the best one per query, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and NVIDIA Nemotron. Pro and Max let you select a preferred model; Max adds advanced reasoning models for deep investigations and large datasets.
Consumer plans on Perplexity's pricing page and Max help article:
| Plan | US list price | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Cited search with limited Pro Searches and Research; basic uploads |
| Pro | $20/month (about $17/month billed annually) | Higher limits, Deep Research, Perplexity Computer, preferred model, create documents and apps, premium sources |
| Max | $200/month or $2,000/year | Highest limits and frontier-model access; priority support; early features |
Perplexity documents Max pricing in its Max help article ($200 monthly or $2,000 annually; annual billing on the web app). Education Pro is a discounted student/educator tier with SheerID verification; see Perplexity's plan guide for eligibility.
Best for: current-events questions, research that needs visible sources, comparing claims across the web, and people who want a citation trail without leaving the answer.
Watch out for: Free Pro Search and Research quotas are tight; heavy Computer, Research or file work usually means Pro or Max. Claude still leads for long creative drafting, Projects and Anthropic-native coding tools.
What Claude is
Claude is Anthropic's flagship assistant on the web, desktop and mobile. The Free plan includes chat, web search, file creation, code execution, Artifacts, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month when billed annually ($200 up front). Pro adds more usage, Projects, Research, Claude Code, Claude Science, Dashboards (beta), Claude in Chrome, and Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook, per Claude's pricing page.
Max starts at $100 a month with 5× or 20× Pro's usage, higher output limits, priority access and $100–$200 a month in API credits depending on tier. Team needs at least two members: Standard seats are $25/member/month ($20 yearly) and Premium seats $125 ($100 yearly), according to Anthropic's Team plan help article. Enterprise is $20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates, billed annually, with stronger admin and compliance controls.
Model-wise, Free users get Sonnet and Haiku; Pro and above add Opus, with Fable available through credits or higher plan limits. Our Claude Fable vs Opus vs Mythos guide covers which Claude to pick for a given job. For how Claude compares inside Microsoft's apps, see Microsoft Copilot vs Claude.
Best for: long documents, careful writing, multi-file Projects, Research reports on paid plans, and coding with Claude Code on Pro and above.
Watch out for: Free Claude is not a citation-first answer engine the way Perplexity is; Research is a paid-plan feature, not the Free default layout.
Where they shine (and where they don't)
Research and current information
Perplexity wins the default research layout. Answers arrive with citations you can open. Pro and Max raise Research and file limits and unlock premium sources, per Perplexity's plan comparison and pricing FAQ.
Claude can search the web on Free and, on Pro and above, run Research. The difference is product shape: Claude treats search and Research as tools inside a chat workspace; Perplexity treats cited search as the product.
For a broader chatbot lineup that includes ChatGPT and Gemini, see ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok. For ChatGPT specifically against Perplexity, see ChatGPT vs Perplexity.
Writing, documents and Projects
Claude is the stronger general writing workspace. Projects organize chats and documents; Artifacts, Design, Slides and Docs support structured outputs; Pro unlocks higher usage and Claude Code. Perplexity Pro and Max can create documents and apps and run Computer workflows, but the everyday product still centers on search-and-cite.
If your main job is GPT-6 Interactive UI or custom GPTs, also try ChatGPT. If your work already lives in Google apps, compare Gemini.
Pricing: Pro vs Pro at twenty dollars
Both Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro list at about $20 per month (both also advertise roughly $17 per month when billed annually). That makes the twenty-dollar decision a use-case call:
| If you mostly… | Prefer |
|---|---|
| Want cited answers and live web research | Perplexity Pro |
| Want Claude chat, Projects, Research, Claude Code | Claude Pro |
| Hit Free limits on both | Start with the product that matches the job, not both at once |
| Need maximum personal usage | Claude Max (from $100) or Perplexity Max ($200) |
Claude Max starts lower than Perplexity Max ($100 vs $200) for heavy personal usage, but the products buy different headroom: Claude usage and API credits versus Perplexity Computer, Research and frontier routing.
Privacy and training
Anthropic lets Claude users turn off "Help Improve our AI models" under Privacy settings, and offers Incognito chats that are not used to improve Claude even when model improvement is on (Anthropic model improvement settings; Incognito chats).
Perplexity says Free, Pro and Max users have AI Data Retention enabled by default, and can opt out in Account Settings so future data is not used to train models. Opt-outs do not erase data collected before the change. Enterprise data is never used for AI training, per Perplexity's data collection help article.
Both products still process data to run the service. If you need zero-training enterprise contracts, look at Claude Team/Enterprise or Perplexity Enterprise rather than consumer Free/Pro/Max alone.
Perplexity vs Claude for research
For perplexity vs claude for research, Perplexity is usually the faster path to a sourced brief. Start there when the question is "what do current sources say?" Move the draft into Claude when you need to rewrite, expand, critique or turn the brief into a longer document with Projects and careful editing.
Claude Research on Pro and above is competitive for multi-step reports inside Anthropic's workspace. It is not a substitute for reading the underlying sources yourself on either product.
Who should pick which
- You want citations on every answer: Perplexity Free, then Pro if you hit limits.
- You want a Claude daily driver for writing and Projects: Claude Free, then Pro.
- You are choosing one $20 seat: Perplexity Pro for research; Claude Pro for chat workspace and Claude Code.
- You need maximum personal usage: Claude Max or Perplexity Max — pick by whether Anthropic usage/API credits or search-and-cite Computer headroom matters more.
- You care about turning off training on consumer chats: both offer toggles; Claude's Privacy setting plus Incognito is the Anthropic path; Perplexity's AI Data Retention opt-out is the Perplexity path.
- You need workplace admin controls: Claude Team/Enterprise or Perplexity Enterprise, not Free alone.

Perplexity Pro vs Claude Pro: which $20 plan?
