Perplexity vs Gemini comes down to one question: do you want an answer engine or an assistant that lives in your Google account? Pick Perplexity when every answer should start with a web search and show its sources inline. Pick Gemini when you want Google's own frontier model, Gemini 4 Argon on paid plans, working inside Gmail, Docs, Drive and Chrome. If you only research, Perplexity is the sharper tool. If you live in Google apps, Gemini gives you more for about the same money.
There is a twist that most comparisons miss. Perplexity does not build one flagship model. Its pricing FAQ says it orchestrates several top models, Google Gemini among them, and lets Pro and Max users pick a preferred model. So "Perplexity vs Gemini" is partly a contest between a product that rents frontier models and the company that trains one.
Facts below come from Perplexity's and Google's own pricing, plan and help pages, checked on October 21, 2026. Prices are US list prices before tax, and both companies change limits often, so recheck before you buy.

Spoken plainly: Perplexity shows you where an answer came from. Gemini does things across your Google life, and from AI Pro up it runs Google's newest flagship.
What Perplexity does best
Perplexity's pitch is simple: ask a question, get a sourced answer. Its pricing page promises citations in every answer, and the FAQ says Pro adds premium data sources such as PitchBook and Statista, which matters for market and finance research.
The plan ladder is short. Free covers everyday questions with limited weekly use of the stronger models. Pro is listed at $17 a month when billed annually on Perplexity's Pro page, with expanded access to Perplexity Computer, 4,000 bonus credits, deep research, model selection, and documents and apps. Max is $200 a month or $2,000 a year (the annual option is web only, per Perplexity's Max help article), and adds 10,000 monthly Computer credits, 35,000 bonus credits, frontier models and the highest limits.
Best for: fact finding, current events, comparing claims across many sites, and anyone who wants to click through to the source before trusting an answer.
Watch out for: Perplexity is weaker as a place to keep long projects, write long documents or act inside your email and calendar. The free plan's limits on the stronger models run out fast if you research every day.
What Gemini does best
Gemini is Google's assistant on the web, on Android and iOS, and now on macOS. Google's subscriptions page lists what each tier gets in the Gemini app. The free plan runs on the Flash-Lite model but still includes image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems. Usage limits are compute based: they refresh every 5 hours until you hit a weekly cap, and you can buy AI credits to keep going.
The big October change is the model. On October 13, 2026 Google brought Gemini 4 Argon to the Gemini app for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The same post added a chat to tasks toggle, so Gemini can work on a job in the background, and more than 40 connected apps such as Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify. Our Gemini 4 Argon release date guide covers who got access and when.
Google's AI plans page shows the money side:
| Plan | US price | What changes in Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Flash-Lite model, 15 GB storage |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99 a month | Flash model, 2x usage, 400 GB storage |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 a month | Gemini 4 Argon and 3.1 Pro, 4x usage, 1 million token context, 5 TB storage |
| Google AI Ultra | $99.99 or $199.99 a month | 5x or 20x Pro usage, highest Argon access, 20 TB or 30 TB storage |
In words: AI Plus is cheap but has no Argon. AI Pro is the first plan with Google's flagship, and it also bundles Gemini in Gmail and Docs, Tasks in Gemini, YouTube Premium Lite and 5 TB of storage.
Best for: people already on Gmail, Docs, Drive and Android, long files (Pro lists a 1 million token context window), images and video, and handing off multistep tasks.
Watch out for: Gemini can ground answers in Google Search, but a visible source list is not the default shape of every reply the way it is on Perplexity. Argon is not on the free plan or AI Plus.
Perplexity vs Gemini for research
For perplexity vs gemini for research, the honest answer is that they research differently.
Perplexity treats each question as a search job. You see the sources next to the answer, you can open them, and you can switch the underlying model on Pro. That makes it the faster way to a checked brief on a news story, a company or a product.
Gemini's Deep Research is available even on the free plan. Google describes it as browsing and analyzing hundreds of websites to build a long report in minutes. Paid plans raise how often you can run it, and AI Pro adds Deep Search in AI Mode in Search (US only). If your sources are your own files, Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) sits in the same subscription.
A practical split: Perplexity for quick sourced lookups, Gemini Deep Research for a long report you can move into Google Docs. Both can still get facts wrong, so read the cited pages.
Perplexity Pro vs Google AI Pro: the twenty dollar choice
Perplexity Pro at $17 a month (annual) and Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month sit close on price, but they buy different things.
| If you mostly | Pick |
|---|---|
| Need cited answers and premium data sources | Perplexity Pro |
| Want Gemini 4 Argon plus Gmail, Docs and 5 TB storage | Google AI Pro |
| Want to try several vendors' models in one app | Perplexity Pro |
| Want image, video and music tools in the same plan | Google AI Pro |
| Need the most usage possible | Gemini Ultra 20x ($199.99) or Perplexity Max ($200) |
At the top end the prices match almost exactly: $199.99 for Ultra's 20x tier against $200 for Perplexity Max. Ultra also has a $99.99 tier with 5x Pro usage, which Perplexity has no equivalent for. For how Google AI Pro stacks up against ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro, see our plan comparison.
Privacy and training
Perplexity says Free, Pro and Max users have AI data retention switched on by default, which means their data can be used for model training. You can turn it off under Account settings, then Preferences. Opting out only covers data collected after the switch, and Enterprise data is never used for training, per Perplexity's data collection help article.
Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says that with Keep Activity on, your chats are saved, used to improve Google services including training generative AI models, and a subset is read by human reviewers. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, disconnected from your account. With Keep Activity off, or in a temporary chat, future chats are not used for training (unless you send feedback) but are still held for 72 hours. Google also says Gemini chats are not currently used to show you ads.
The upshot: both default to using your chats to improve their AI, and both let you switch that off. Google's setting has a catch. Some connected apps, such as Google Workspace, stop working when Keep Activity is off.
