Perplexity vs Grok is a job match, not a crown. Choose Perplexity when you want answers that open with live web search and inline citations. Choose Grok when you want SpaceXSI's standalone chat with real-time web and X search, voice, Imagine media, connectors and a shared weekly usage pool across Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build. Many people keep both: Perplexity for sourced briefs, Grok for live X-aware chat and media.
Facts below are from Perplexity's and SpaceXSI's (xAI) own product, pricing and legal pages, checked on October 14, 2026. Prices are US list prices; taxes and regional offers vary. Always re-check live pricing before you buy.

Spoken plainly: Perplexity is built as an answer engine that shows its sources. Grok is built as SpaceXSI's general assistant with live search, media and a paid usage ladder tied to X and grok.com.
What Perplexity is
Perplexity is an answer engine: it searches the web and replies with inline citations that show where each claim came from. Perplexity's pricing FAQ states that every answer includes inline citations, and that Pro and Max add premium data sources such as PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ for finance and market work (Perplexity pricing).
On models, the same pricing FAQ says Perplexity orchestrates multiple top models and selects the best one per query, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and NVIDIA Nemotron. Pro and Max let you select a preferred model; Max adds advanced reasoning models for deep investigations and large datasets.
Consumer plans on Perplexity's pricing page and Max help article:
| Plan | US list price | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Cited search with limited weekly usage of top models; basic uploads |
| Pro | About $17/month when billed annually | Higher limits, Deep Research, Perplexity Computer, preferred model, create documents and apps, premium sources |
| Max | $200/month or $2,000/year (about $167/month on annual billing on the pricing page) | Highest limits and frontier-model access; priority features |
Perplexity documents Max pricing in its Max help article ($200 monthly or $2,000 annually; annual billing on the web app). Always re-check the live monthly Pro price on the pricing page before you buy.
Best for: current-events questions, research that needs visible sources, comparing claims across the web, and people who want a citation trail without leaving the answer.
Watch out for: Free weekly quotas are tight; heavy Computer, Research or file work usually means Pro or Max. Grok still leads when you want X-native live chat, Imagine video and SpaceXSI's connector/Bot stack.
What Grok is
Grok is SpaceXSI's consumer assistant on grok.com and in the Grok iOS and Android apps. SpaceXSI's docs say you sign in once and conversations, settings and subscription stay in sync across platforms. You can chat, create images and video with Grok Imagine, use voice, upload files, and connect tools such as email, files and calendar, per SpaceXSI's Grok overview.
Grok is free to start. Paid plans raise limits and unlock more across Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build, drawing from a single weekly usage allowance. When the weekly pool runs out, SpaceXSI documents Extra Usage Credits (from five dollars on the web) or an upgrade to a higher tier, per the Grok FAQ.
US monthly list prices shown on x.ai/pricing as of this writing:
| Plan | US monthly price | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited Chat and agent requests |
| Plus | $8 | Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build; Grok API access; shared AI usage pool |
| Premium | $30 | About 4× Plus usage; Grok Bot; latest Grok models; faster chat; images and video; cloud agents |
| Super | $100 | About 15× Plus usage; priority model access at peak times |
| Ultra | $200 | About 50× Plus usage for power users |
SpaceXSI's pricing FAQ recommends Premium for new AI users, Super for daily agent users and Ultra for power users. Usage refreshes weekly; different products draw different amounts from the same pool.
Best for: breaking news and posts on X, people who want a dedicated Grok app, file analysis, Imagine media and paid Grok Bot / agent workflows.
Watch out for: Premium at thirty dollars is steeper than Perplexity's annual Pro rate for citation-first research; free Grok still has usage limits. Perplexity remains the clearer pick when every claim needs an openable citation by default.
Where they shine (and where they don't)
Research and current information
Perplexity wins the default research layout. Answers arrive with citations you can open. Pro and Max raise Research, Computer and file limits and unlock premium sources, per Perplexity pricing.
Grok wins when "what is happening on X right now" matters as much as a formal citation trail. SpaceXSI markets real-time search inside a chat workspace, not a citation-first answer engine. For ChatGPT against Perplexity specifically, see ChatGPT vs Perplexity. For Claude against Perplexity, see Perplexity vs Claude.
Writing, chat and media
Grok is the stronger general chat-and-media destination: synced history, voice, Imagine image and video, connectors and Grok Bot on higher tiers. Perplexity Pro and Max can create documents and apps and run Computer workflows, but the everyday product still centers on search-and-cite.
If your main job is GPT-6 Interactive UI or custom GPTs, also try ChatGPT. If you want Anthropic's Projects and Claude Code workspace, compare Claude. For Meta's in-app assistant against Grok, see Meta AI vs Grok.
Pricing ladders
The ladders are shaped differently:
| If you mostly… | Prefer |
|---|---|
| Want cited answers and live web research | Perplexity Free, then Pro |
| Want Grok chat, Imagine, voice and X-aware search | Grok Free, then Plus or Premium |
| Hit Free limits on research | Perplexity Pro (annual rate about $17/month) |
| Want Grok Bot and higher weekly pool | Grok Premium ($30) or Super ($100) |
| Need maximum personal headroom | Perplexity Max ($200) or Grok Ultra ($200) — pick by product, not price alone |
A twenty-dollar-class seat on Perplexity Pro buys citation-first research. A thirty-dollar Premium seat on Grok buys a larger weekly pool across Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and Grok Bot. They are not interchangeable upgrades.
Privacy and training
SpaceXSI's Consumer FAQ states that Grok may use your prompts, searches and other submitted content plus Grok's responses to train models, and that you control this with the "Improve the Model" setting (mobile: Settings → Data Controls; web: Settings → Data). Private Chat (ghost icon) is not used for model training. SpaceXSI says it does not use content from business and enterprise customers to improve models. Opting out applies to new conversations; voluntary feedback may still be used for training.
Perplexity documents that consumer Free, Pro and Max users can opt out of AI training data collection (see Perplexity's data-collection help linked from its model and privacy articles). Enterprise data is handled under enterprise terms. Both products still process data to run the service. If you need zero-training enterprise contracts, look at Perplexity Enterprise or SpaceXSI Business/Enterprise rather than consumer Free alone.
Who should pick which
- You want citations on every answer: Perplexity Free, then Pro if you hit limits.
- You want live X-aware chat, Imagine and voice: Grok Free, then Plus or Premium.
- You are choosing one research seat under twenty dollars a month (annual): Perplexity Pro.
- You want Grok Bot and a larger weekly pool: Grok Premium or Super.
- You need maximum personal usage: Perplexity Max or Grok Ultra — pick by whether search-and-cite Computer headroom or Grok's media/agent pool matters more.
- You care about turning off training on consumer chats: both offer controls; Grok's Improve the Model toggle plus Private Chat is the SpaceXSI path; Perplexity's consumer training opt-out is the Perplexity path.
- You already compared Meta AI vs Grok: use Meta AI vs Grok for the in-app Meta angle; this page is the citation-engine vs Grok angle.

FAQ
Is Perplexity better than Grok?
Not overall. Perplexity is better when you need cited, web-grounded answers. Grok is better for live X-aware chat, Imagine media, voice and SpaceXSI's connector/Bot stack. Pick by the job.
Is Perplexity free?
Yes. The Free plan includes cited search with limited weekly usage of top models. Heavier research, Computer and create-files usage usually needs Pro or Max.
Is Grok free?
Yes to start. Free includes limited Chat and agent requests. Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra raise the shared weekly usage pool and unlock more products; see x.ai/pricing.
Perplexity Pro vs Grok Premium: which paid seat?
Choose Perplexity Pro if your bottleneck is research with citations and premium sources. Choose Grok Premium if your bottleneck is Grok chat, Imagine, Grok Bot and a larger weekly pool across SpaceXSI products.
Does Perplexity use Grok models?
Perplexity's model help has listed Grok among models available on some paid plans at times, but model menus change. Perplexity's pricing FAQ still describes orchestration across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Nemotron with preferred-model selection on Pro and Max. That is Perplexity's product routing, not the same as using grok.com.
Can I use both?
Yes. A common pattern is Perplexity for sourced research, then Grok for live X context, voice or Imagine. Just do not paste confidential material into either product without checking your plan's privacy settings and workplace rules.
