ChatGPT vs Google Search is no longer a lopsided question, but Google is still far bigger. On November 2, 2026, OpenAI's consumer product lead for ChatGPT, Adam Fry, said ChatGPT's volume of search like queries is now roughly one fifth of Google's. Use ChatGPT when you want one written answer you can question and refine in a conversation. Use Google Search (and its AI Mode) when you want the widest index of the web, local listings, shopping results and the option to scan many sources yourself. Most people will use both, and the right pick depends on the question, not on which brand is winning.
This guide explains what OpenAI actually claimed, how the two search experiences work today, where each one is better, and what to watch for on ads and privacy. Facts come from OpenAI's and Google's own help pages and announcements, checked on November 5, 2026, plus the interview where the claim was made.
What OpenAI said about ChatGPT and Google
Fry made the comparison at an OpenAI dinner in New York, in a conversation with Alex Kantrowitz that Big Technology published the next day. His words were that "ChatGPT's volume of search like queries is now roughly one fifth the volume of queries of Google." The same interview reports ChatGPT growing from 1 billion to 1.2 billion weekly active users in about 60 days.
Three details matter before you repeat the number:
- OpenAI gave a ratio, not a count. The Verge notes that Fry did not say which Google figure he compared against.
- A "search" in ChatGPT is a question that sends ChatGPT to the web. Asked how searches are counted, Fry said every question that makes ChatGPT search the web counts as one, as Search Engine Journal reports. ChatGPT decides on its own when to search, so this is not the same unit as a query typed into Google.
- Google's last public total is more than 5 trillion searches a year, a figure Google shared in 2025, as Search Engine Land notes. Google has not published a newer total.
So the honest reading is this: ChatGPT now handles a large share of the questions people used to type into a search box, by OpenAI's own definition, but Google still handles several times more. Volume of questions is also not the same as traffic sent to websites, which outside trackers still put heavily in Google's favor.

How ChatGPT search works
According to OpenAI's help article on searching the web, ChatGPT can search the web on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and people who are not signed in can use it too. It searches automatically when a question would benefit from current information, or you can pick Search from the tools menu or type a slash in the message box.
Answers that use the web can include citations, and a Sources button shows the links it used. OpenAI's own page is frank that results "can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect" and tells you to open the cited source when accuracy matters.
Two details surprise many people. First, ChatGPT search sometimes works with outside search providers. It rewrites your question into shorter, targeted queries and sends those, along with a general location based on your IP address, but OpenAI says it does not share the IP address itself or your account details. The help page names Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for those partners. Second, if memory is on, ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a query, so a remembered city or diet can shape what it looks up.
OpenAI also offers a Chrome extension that makes ChatGPT the default search engine in the address bar. Typing an exclamation mark and the letter g before your words still sends that search to Google.
How Google AI Mode works
Google now runs two AI layers on top of its classic results. AI Overviews appear above regular results for some queries. AI Mode is the full conversational version, which you open at google.com/ai, from the AI Mode button under the search bar, or in the Google app.
Per Google's AI Mode help page, AI Mode uses a "query fan out" technique: it divides your question into subtopics, searches each one at the same time, and combines the results into one response with links. You can ask with text, voice, images, PDFs or a pasted URL, and ask follow up questions. If Google is not confident in an AI answer, it may show a set of links instead.
Google says AI Mode is available in more than 200 countries and territories after its latest expansion. The help page lists no subscription requirement for AI Mode itself. What paid plans add is a model choice: Gemini 4 Argon can be selected in AI Mode by Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over in supported countries, with daily usage limits, according to the same help page and Google's Argon announcement.
Where ChatGPT is better
- Questions that need an explanation, not a page. "Explain how a heat pump works and whether it suits a cold climate" gets one structured answer you can push back on.
- Follow up questions in context. ChatGPT keeps the whole conversation, so "now compare that with a gas furnace" works without repeating yourself.
- Mixing search with other work. You can search, then ask ChatGPT to turn the findings into a table, an email draft or a checklist in the same chat.
- Fewer clicks for simple facts. You read the answer and open a source only if you need to check it.
Where Google Search is better
- Finding a specific page or site. Navigational searches (a bank login, a government form, a product manual) are still faster on Google.
- Local and shopping results. Maps, opening hours, reviews and price comparisons are built into Google's results.
- Scanning many sources yourself. A page of ten results shows you the range of what is out there, which matters for news, medical and financial questions where you want more than one view.
- Breadth of the index. Google crawls the web at a scale no assistant matches, and AI Mode draws on that same index.
Pros and cons
ChatGPT search
- Pros: conversational follow ups, one clear written answer, works signed out, can turn results into documents and tables, no ads on Plus and higher.
- Cons: decides on its own when to search, answers can miss or misread sources, local results depend on location settings, ads may appear on Free and Go.
Google Search and AI Mode
- Pros: biggest web index, strong local and shopping results, classic links and AI answers side by side, AI Mode available without a subscription.
- Cons: ads in both classic results and AI Mode, AI answers can still be wrong, more clicking when you want a single synthesized answer.
Ads and privacy: what changes with each
Ads are now part of both products, which makes the old "chat is ad free" contrast out of date. OpenAI's ads help page says ads may appear on the Free and Go plans, below a response, and that Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not get ads. OpenAI says ads do not influence answers, are not shown near sensitive topics such as health or politics, are not shown to accounts identified as under 18, and that advertisers never receive your chats. Free users can switch to an ad free option with lower limits, and Temporary Chats show no ads.
Google, for its part, expanded ads in AI Mode to ten more countries on October 28, 2026, and launched ads in follow up questions in the US. On data, Google's help page says it uses people's interactions with Search and its AI features, including what they search for and their feedback, to improve those features, with reviewer data disconnected from accounts.

Which should you use?
Here is a simple rule that holds up in practice. If you already know roughly what the answer should look like and just need it written out, start in ChatGPT. If you need a particular place, page, product or local business, start in Google. For anything with real stakes (health, money, legal questions), use either one to get oriented, then open and read the primary source.

| Your question | Better starting point |
|---|---|
| "What's the best way to learn Spanish in six months?" | ChatGPT |
| "Pharmacy open near me now" | |
| "Compare these three laptops for video editing" | Either (ChatGPT to reason, Google for current prices) |
| "Official form to renew my passport" | |
| "Summarize what changed in this week's AI news" | ChatGPT or AI Mode, then check the sources |
FAQ
Is ChatGPT replacing Google?
Not yet. OpenAI says ChatGPT handles about a fifth as many search like queries as Google, counted as every question that sends ChatGPT to the web. That is a big number, but it means Google still handles several times more, and Google has not published a new total since its 2025 figure of more than 5 trillion searches a year.
Is ChatGPT search free?
Yes. OpenAI says web search is available on the Free plan and even to people who are not signed in, subject to usage limits. Ads may appear on Free and Go, while Plus and higher plans have no ads.
What is the difference between ChatGPT search and Google AI Mode?
Both give a conversational answer with links. ChatGPT search lives inside a general assistant and searches only when it needs to, sometimes through partner search providers. AI Mode lives inside Google Search, always draws on Google's index and splits your question into subtopics that it searches at the same time.
Can I make ChatGPT my default search engine?
In Google Chrome, yes. OpenAI offers a ChatGPT search extension that sends address bar searches to ChatGPT. Typing an exclamation mark and g before a search sends that one to Google instead.
Which is more accurate, ChatGPT or Google?
Neither is reliable enough to trust blindly. OpenAI and Google both warn that their AI answers can be wrong. Classic Google results let you judge sources yourself, while ChatGPT gives you citations to check. For anything important, open the source.
