Is Anthropic API free? No, not in the way most people hope. A Claude Console account and an API key cost nothing, and Anthropic says new users receive "a small amount of free credits to test the API," but there is no monthly free tier. After that test credit, every call is paid per token from prepaid credits. The one real way to get recurring free API usage is indirect: Claude Max and Team subscriptions now include monthly API credits.
Everything below comes from Anthropic's own pages, checked on October 25, 2026: the Claude API pricing docs, the public pricing page, the API credits for Max and Team plans docs, the rate limits page and the Help Center article How do I pay for my Claude API usage?. Prices are US list prices.
Is Anthropic API free? The short answer
The Anthropic API has a few free pieces around a paid core.
| What you want | Free? | What Anthropic says |
|---|---|---|
| A Claude Console account and an API key | Yes | Sign up at platform.claude.com and create a key |
| A first test of the API | A little | New users get a small free credit; the amount is not published |
| Ongoing API calls from your own code | No | Prepaid usage credits, or monthly invoicing arranged through sales |
| The Console playground | No | Playground usage draws on the same credits as the API |
| Monthly API credits | With Max or Team | $100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x, up to $500 pooled on Team |
The Help Center is blunt about what happens with an empty balance: "If you run out of credits, you can no longer call the API or use the playground until you add more." A key with no credits behind it will not return answers.
Is the Anthropic API key free?
Yes. Creating a Console organization and a key does not cost anything, and the official SDKs read the key from an environment variable called ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, per Anthropic's quickstart. What costs money is the usage billed to that key. If keys are new to you, our guide to what an LLM API key is explains how billing attaches to one and how to keep it safe.
One common mixup: the Claude app has a $0 Free plan, but that plan covers chatting on the web, desktop and mobile. Anthropic's Help Center says a paid Claude subscription "enhances your chat experience, and the Claude API is billed separately." Even Claude Pro does not include API credits.
Claude API pricing in October 2026
These are the current models from the pricing docs, per million tokens.
| Model | Input | Output | Batch input | Batch output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100,000 tokens) | $0.10 | $0.50 | $0.05 | $0.25 |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 (prompts over 100,000 tokens) | $0.50 | $2.50 | $0.25 | $1.25 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | $1 | $5 |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | $2 | $10 |
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $10 | $50 | $5 | $25 |
The rules around those numbers matter as much as the numbers:
- Batch halves the price. The Message Batches API takes 50% off input and output for work that does not need an instant reply.
- Caching makes repeats cheap. A cache hit on Sonnet 5.5 costs $0.10 per million tokens, and on Opus 5.5 $0.20.
- Haiku 5.5 has a size threshold. A prompt over 100,000 tokens pays the higher Haiku rate for the whole request. Other current models include the full 1M token context at standard pricing.
- US only inference costs 10% more. Setting
inference_geoto US applies a 1.1x multiplier. - Web search is extra. It is $10 per 1,000 searches plus the tokens the results add. Web fetch has no extra fee beyond tokens.
- Newer models count more tokens. Claude 4.7 and later use a tokenizer that produces about 30% more tokens for the same text, so compare prices with that in mind.
For a model by model breakdown, see Claude Fable vs Opus vs Mythos. For the cheapest tier against OpenAI's, see Claude Haiku 5.5 vs GPT-6 Luna.
What a small project really costs
Simple arithmetic with the list prices above: say your app sends 1,000 requests, each with about 1,000 tokens in and 500 tokens out. That is one million input tokens and half a million output tokens.
| Model | Input cost | Output cost | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.25 | $0.35 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $5 | $7 |
| Opus 5.5 | $4 | $10 | $14 |
So a hobby project on Haiku costs pocket change, and the same traffic on Opus costs forty times more. Your real bill depends on prompt length, reasoning output and tool calls, so watch the Usage and Cost pages in the Console.
The Max and Team plan API credits
This is the newest and least known way to use the Claude API for free, though you pay for the subscription. Anthropic's docs list these monthly amounts:
| Plan | Monthly API credit |
|---|---|
| Max 5x | $100 |
| Max 20x | $200 |
| Team, Standard seat | $20 per seat |
| Team, Premium seat | $100 per seat |
| Team pool cap | $500 |
How it works, per the credits docs and the matching Help Center article:
- Be on Max or Team for at least 7 days. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible.
- On claude.ai, open Settings, then Billing (or Organization settings, then Billing on Team), and link a Console organization. You can link only one, and you cannot change it yourself later.
- The credits appear as promotional credits in that organization. No payment method is needed on the Claude Platform.
The fine print: the credits cover the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Claude Agent SDK and the playground, but not Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps. They expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover, they only work on the Claude API itself (not Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry), and when they run out, requests stop until the next batch arrives unless you have bought credits too. Usage is never charged to your Claude plan.

Is Anthropic API free for students?
There is no general student discount on the API. The options that do exist:
- Claude Campus. Anthropic's campus program replaced individual student credits with ambassador roles. Undergraduates who lead a Claude Builder Club share resources "like API credits" with members, and selected ambassadors get a $3,600 stipend. Applications for the 2026 to 2027 school year opened September 1 and closed September 12, so the practical route right now is joining a club that already exists on your campus.
- AI for Science. Researchers at academic and nonprofit institutions can apply for up to $20,000 in API credits for six months, according to the program's Help Center page and Anthropic's launch announcement. Biology and life sciences get priority, and applications are reviewed on the first Monday of each month.
- Ask. The pricing docs say academic and research discounts "might be available" through sales.
How to use the Anthropic Claude API for free (or close to it)
- Spend the new user credit on testing. Check the Billing page after sign up to see what was applied, and use it to confirm your integration works.
- Pick Haiku 5.5 for routine work. At $0.10 and $0.50 per million tokens it is the cheapest current Claude model.
- Batch and cache. Batch halves the bill and cache hits cost a fraction of normal input.
- Set a spend limit. Anthropic lets you set your own monthly limit below your tier's cap, and give each project its own workspace limit.
- Use Max or Team credits if you already pay for one of those plans.
- Need truly free monthly calls? Google's Gemini API in Google AI Studio has a free tier. Our guide to free OpenAI API alternatives compares it with the OpenAI API, and is xAI API free covers the xAI API.
How paying for the Anthropic API works
You buy prepaid credits on the Console Billing page with a card, and they are usable at once. You are billed only for successful calls, though a request that was on track to succeed is still charged if your client disconnects. Purchased credits expire one year after purchase and are non refundable. Auto reload can top up your balance when it falls below a level you choose.
Every organization also sits on a usage tier with a monthly spend cap. New organizations may start in an Evaluation tier with lower limits that rise as usage history builds.
| Tier | Monthly spend cap |
|---|---|
| Start | $500 |
| Build | $1,000 |
| Scale | $200,000 |

Who should pay for the Claude API
If you want Claude inside your own app or script, a few dollars of credit on Haiku 5.5 goes a long way. Max subscribers should claim their monthly credit first. If you only want to chat with Claude, the free Claude app is the simpler answer. If your budget is truly zero, start with Gemini's free API tier and come back to Claude when you can fund it.
FAQ
Does the Anthropic API have a free tier?
No. Anthropic documents a small free credit for new users to test the API, not a monthly free allowance. After that, usage is paid from prepaid credits.
How much free credit do new Anthropic API users get?
Anthropic does not publish the amount. Its pricing FAQ only says new users receive a small amount of free credits. Check the Billing page in the Console after signing up.

How do I use the Anthropic API for the first time?
Create a Console account at platform.claude.com, add credits or claim plan credits, create a key, save it as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and send a request with Anthropic's SDK, naming a model such as Haiku 5.5 or Opus 5.5.
